3 Really Good Reasons To Start Meditating Today

I used to think meditation was just something woo-woo types did to check out of reality. I really had no connection at all to the powers or needs of my own mind. I’m grateful I got introduced into meditation over the last several years through many different teachers, who showed me the incredible benefits of meditating regularly. Now I take some time to meditate (almost) every day.

Meditation helps ease a lot of the pains our society takes a lot of medications for these days. It has so many benefits, including reducing stress, improving focus and helping you create stronger relationships. When you’re busy and stressed, meditation has what you need to calm your nerves. I find huge improvements in my stress level and mental clarity when I find the time to meditate regularly.

It’s easy for me to put off meditating when I’ve got a busy schedule, a lot on my mind, or tell myself I have almost anything better to do than sit in silence for a while. If you’re having a hard time keeping up with your meditation schedule, or even just having trouble getting started, here are some really great reasons to get you into your flow.

Really Good Reason #1: Stress Sucks

Being stressed out all the time is not normal. Your body releases chemicals when you’re stressed to help you escape tigers and run for cover. These chemicals intend to boost your abilities in the short time, in exchange for some harm on your system. Your body can handle these stress chemicals from time to time, but extended exposure causes some serious damage to your mood, your heart and your brain.

I used to be addicted to stress. I thought it was the only way to be productive, and I would start to feel stressed about not being stressed any time I’d get any relief. Even though I knew these same stats about how damaging stress is to our bodies, I still kept myself in a constant state of pressure and alertness. Needless to say, I wasn’t very happy.

Meditation helped me learn how to “quiet the noise” in my head. It helped me understand stress was something happening in my mind – it wasn’t my entire mind. I find that now I can actually get way more done when I’m not spending so much energy fueling the stress monster in my mind. Meditation really helped me get this under control.

Really Good Reason #2: You Were Going To Kill 10 Minutes Anyway

Do you ever pick up your phone just to check out what that beep was, then look up an hour later and wonder where you’ve been? Me too.

I’ve always been shocked any time I document exactly how I spend each minute of a day. I discover how much “filler” I put in my day – items like checking my phone that appear in my head to take no time actually add up to a good chunk of my day. When I have “time to kill,” I often end up heading down the social media/ Netflix rabbit hole.

This is also why I have to laugh any time I tell myself I don’t have time to meditate on any particular day. I clearly have plenty of time to sit and relax, so why not do it with intention to get stress relieving benefits?

Take a look at how you spend your time each day, and look at just 10 minutes you can turn into your meditation time. Try it just one day, then go from there.

Really Good Reason #3: You Deserve It

Let’s face it: you are awesome. You deserve to feel happy, relaxed, excited, motivated and satisfied. Meditation helps you practice the skills you need to effectively switch your mood to these states any time you want.

Taking time out of your busy schedule to meditate gives you more than just the stress relief and clarity meditation gives you – it also gives you power over your own schedule and your own day. This is a proactive step you are taking to create your day, instead of allowing others and circumstance to dictate your path. Feel powerful about how you’re spending your time on this rock.

Give yourself a treat and start meditating today – whether you’ve never meditated before or you’re getting back on track. Give yourself the space to release your stress, if even just for a minute. Feel what it’s like to breathe again…
