3 Healthy Reasons To Replace Alcohol With Weed

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy alcohol. I love a chilled glass of white wine on a warm evening to take the edge off a long day. But about a year ago when I was making a new diet plan and looking for calories to cut, I started to wonder if I could replace alcohol with weed as my recreational choice. I am very pleased with the results.

I am amazed how frightened our culture is of marijuana. Even though we’re slowly starting to warm back up to this little green herb as states across America start legalizing its sale, marijuana is a federally criminal issue. It’s hard to imagine that banning marijuana use is to protect our health, when alcohol is widely available and proven to be disastrous for our health.

In fact, one study found cannabis to be 114 times less deadly than alcohol on a variety of levels. It also found alcohol to be the deadliest drug when it comes to taking high doses. So why is it really that we don’t mind alcohol but we’re terrified of weed?

If you’re looking for a creative change you can make, here are 3 healthy reasons to replace alcohol with weed.

Reason #1: Ditch The Hangover

A fun night of drinking often comes with a painful price the next morning. Nothing seems to cure a throbbing hangover headache. Even though greasy spoon breakfast always seems like the right answer, it always makes things worse. Hangovers are almost like penance for the sins of last night’s decadence.

Ethanol in alcohol drains liquid out of your system and makes you pee more often while you drink. That’s why you have to brave the bathroom line at the bar more often as the night goes on. Even after you go to sleep, your body continues draining fluids faster than normal. When you wake up in the morning, your body is dried out and you’ve got a splitting headache.

Weed can cause dehydration headaches the morning after as well, along with brain fog and drowsiness. However, you’re significantly less likely to experience the same level of dehydration and pain as you will with alcohol. Your body doesn’t need to use as many resources to process marijuana as it does to metabolize alcohol. By replacing alcohol with weed you can get the same relaxing and recreational effects without draining your body and leaving you with a pounding head the next day.

Reason #2: Long Term Health Benefits

Extended alcohol use causes significant damage to your body in the long term. It damages your liver, brain, kidney and more. In men, alcohol can cause damage in the prostate gland. Studies show alcohol even increases your risk for certain cancers with extended heavy use. Over all, regular alcohol users’ health-related costs are eight times higher than regular marijuana users.

Weed doesn’t deplete your body in the same way alcohol does. Your body breaks down cannabis differently than alcohol and it doesn’t require the same amount of limited resources. Studies show marijuana is significantly less addictive than alcohol, and it doesn’t contribute to depression in the same way as alcohol does. Some studies have even shown extended marijuana use actually decreased cancer risk in certain patients.

Cannabinoids in marijuana also work with your body to heal it. Weed has been found to have neuroprotective properties, meaning it actually protects your brain cells and supports their growth. We’re just starting to learn more about our endocannabinoid system as well, which is a powerful network within our bodies that has a huge impact on our health and well being. We’re discovering that cannabis has a wide variety of beneficial properties for our bodies.

Reason #3: Alcohol Will Kill You, Weed Won’t

No one has ever died from marijuana use. In fact, the U.S. Centers For Disease Control (CDC) don’t even have a category to measure deaths caused by weed’s effects. Even in high doses weed has never killed a single person, whereas alcohol is the most likely drug to kill you in high doses. Why is alcohol the legal one again?

While it is true that weed takes a toll on your system just like alcohol does, you’re nowhere near as likely to die from cannabis as you are with alcohol. In fact, you can be dead within minutes of your first drink of alcohol. Binge drinking quickly backs your system up as it tries to process all the alcohol. When that alcohol backs up into your brain, it starts to fail. Although heavy doses of weed will harm your body in a number of ways, there is no evidence they will ever kill you.

Alcohol’s deadly effects extend beyond internal body damage. Too much alcohol can lead to violent and aggressive behavior in some people. Alcohol becomes so much more deadly when it turns off your warning systems and you start putting yourself in danger. Marijuana is not shown to cause these same violent tendencies, and in fact typically causes calm demeanor and relaxation.

Time To Replace Alcohol With Weed?

Replacing alcohol with weed as your go-to for relaxation and recreation can give you many short and long-term health benefits. Not only will you cut large amounts of calories out of your diet, you’ll reduce or eliminate toxins that take a toll on your body and make you feel bad the morning after. Weed might even help you fight certain diseases and strengthen your brain.

I didn’t think I could fully replace alcohol with weed because I enjoy alcohol too much. There’s something unique about a glass of wine or a chilled martini that marijuana just doesn’t seem to match. Even though I still enjoy drinks from time to time I’ve largely made the switch. I have to say I feel healthier and happier because of it.
