How To Be Excellent In Everything You Do
I love watching Bruce Lee fight. There’s so much power in his moves, and at the same time effortless ease. His hands move so quickly I can’t keep up with them, yet he lands every strike with precision. He can successfully take on many different attackers at once as if it’s no problem at all to him. When I think of being excellent, I think of executing with grace and ease like it was just a second thought.
Excellence is “easy” by definition, so why is it so hard to achieve it on a regular basis? The answer lies in our intention behind excellence – “why” we want to be excellent. When I want to be excellent so other people will appreciate me, then I’m focused on “perfection” instead. I’m trying way too hard when I’m working toward perfection and I lose touch with the natural ease of my excellence.
Excellence appears when you want happiness for yourself instead of the approval of others. Getting in touch with yourself and your key desires will point you to excellence almost automatically every time. Use these steps to set your mind and your space to attract what you want, and let excellence flow through you.
Step #1: Set Yourself Up To Win
Thinking back to Bruce Lee, consider all the choices he made that you don’t see during his fights. If he stuffed himself with fast food just before the fight or didn’t train for a week, do you think he’s still be able to defeat so many foes with his bare hands? He would probably show up slower and more out of touch, trying to keep up with the situation instead of mastering it. Bruce Lee wins because he intends to win, and he positions himself to do exactly that.
The first and best way to set yourself up to win is to do something you’re passionate about. You will never work harder and be more disappointed than in trying to be excellent at something that doesn’t interest you. This is true of anything you feel you “should” do. If you feel like you have a “should” but at your core you really want to do this with excellence, look at how you can shift your mindset to focus on that drive that’s pushing you forward. You have to want it.
Set goals for yourself that you can achieve and get the help you need to make them. Avoid making massive benchmarks for yourself that you’re likely to fall short of. Be honest with yourself about your time, resources and commitment, and make small goals you can check off your list. Put your support team in place to give you guidance along the way and help up when you fall down. With your intentions aligned and your support in place, now you have the freedom to focus on being excellent.
Step #2: Get Into “Flow State”
Think about a time you completely lost yourself in an activity then wondered where the time went. You might have been reading a book, playing a game, writing, cooking or exercising. Runners often talk about getting into “The Zone” when they feel at peace while running and time seems to stand still. Any time you achieve a blissful awareness that seems to transcend time, you’ve entered your “Flow State.”
Neurologists tell us that “Flow State” is where you’re not even consciously thinking about things or processing moment by moment. Essentially, it’s a state of relaxed high performance. When you free your mind from the minute details of every passing second, it’s able to operate at a much deeper level for you. This is where inspiration and ease start to enter and your excellence begins to shine through
Getting to this point of mental freedom means turning off the chatter in your mind. This means letting go of stresses, worries, judgements, and other negative emotions that hold you back from diving in wholeheartedly. Letting go of attachments to control and familiar feelings can be difficult, but the pain is worth it. Releasing these blocks aligns you with The Law Of Least Effort and gives you the graceful ease you need to be excellent.
Step #3: Be Excellent By Being Vulnerable
Operating from excellence instead of perfection means you don’t have to get everything right. Being excellent means knowing that you don’t have all the answers and you’re learning from your experience. Bumping your head along the way is not only allowed, it’s required. Excellent people own their errors and build on them, while less-than-excellent folks lie and gaslight to hide their perceived inadequacies. Be excellent by wearing your mistakes with honor.
Even though you might feel separated from time and space while in your Flow State, know that others can see and feel your excellence even more during this time. Share your story along your journey into excellence because you never know who else is listening that wants to follow in your footsteps. You can be the guide he or she needs to achieve excellence for him or herself. When you help another person improve their life and have something they didn’t before, you develop a powerful relationship.
Most of all, keep going! Don’t let your mistakes or misfortunes turn you off your path to excellence. The hardest moments become your most defining ones, and usually the ones that make great stories later. Sit with the discomfort and push forward no matter what. Face your demons and know you’re stronger than them so you can show up powerfully every single day.
Are You Ready To Be Excellent?
Take a look at where you’re spending your time in your life right now to see where you’re living with excellence and where you are not. See what activities you have which you choose to continue, and which are there just because they’ve been there for a long time. Take note of which ones make you happy to think about and dive into, and which ones feel like a chore. You can only get into Flow State with something you want to be doing. That’s why Bruce Lee fights instead of doing taxes.
Feel into your own energy level and see if you’re operating under, above, or right at your optimal point. Can you apply more energy into any of your projects to raise them into excellence? Is there anything you can cut out of your daily routine or to-do list to free up energy for something more worthwhile? Be honest with yourself about what you can and will give.
If you have a passion you don’t spend much time with, or that you dabble in but want to take to the next level, taking these steps will help you achieve what you desire. Getting clear with yourself about who you are and what you want will set you up for excellence and success.
